What were you doing before Dream Doors Kitchen?
Before Dream Doors, I worked in sales for a technology company in the ATM and software security industry.
Why were you looking for something else?
At that time, I just had my second child and I just wanted to find something that would give me that work-life balance that I wanted. And also felt that I was ready to have my own business, after having worked for other people for so many years, I was ready and excited to embark on my own venture.

What were some of the concerns you had before coming onboard?
Some of the concerns that I had before coming on board with Dream Doors were not so much about the business management side of it, but more to do with the fact that I was new to the industry and it was more the experience or the lack of experience within the industry that concerned me. Although after a little while, those fears just go away.
Tell me what does a typical day looks like?
My typical day is waking up, and the first thing I have to do is get my kids out the door and off to school, and then I’m in the office by about 9:30. I’m with my staff for about 2 hours before I go off to do quotes. And then I’m back to pick up my kids at around 3:30. Sometimes I take my kids into the showroom for about an hour. But for me, it’s a good balance in terms of family and running a business of your own.

What do you love most about your Dream Doors Kitchen business?
The best thing about the Dream Doors business is that we’re actually solving a real customer’s problem. Being able to get out there and sell something that you know is a valued proposition for the person that you’re talking to – I think that is the best part of the business. It makes your job so much easier when you know you’re really solving a problem that they want. And I guess second to that would be the fact that, you know, having your own company and being able to be a part of the entire process is a great thing about Dream Doors business.
Are you happy with the decision you have made?
I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s no regrets at all. I think that the reason why that is, is because I made small goals along the way, and making those small goals and achieving them has actually helped to keep going and continue. I always just continue making more goals and trying to achieve those as well to keep myself going.

What kind of people do you think this business is suitable for?
The type of person that this business would be suitable for would be someone who has a real flair for business and not just installing kitchens or trade as such because, initially, I thought that maybe being part of the trade industry would have been better to go into this business, but the more I’m into this business, the more I realise that you really need to understand how business works and be able to put those things together. Learning about the industry comes with it over time.
One of the things that I found that was really important with the business is to try to develop and start up the operational processes internally, and that’s something that the franchise doesn’t give you as such. The franchise will give you the customer’s problem, the proven concepts, the valued proposition, and that’s the most important thing of the business, but in terms of the actual business itself, being able to set it all up and make it run smoothly is critical to setting up a successful business.
I was looking for something that was fairly early on in the life cycle in Australia, so not necessarily a fully established brand in Australia. So I was attracted by opportunities where I was, you know, fairly early on the piece of finding that, that exist in a low entry point financially and also greater opportunities as the brands grow and growth of your business and valuation of your business.Glenn Stanton
